The powerful and ancient Inca Indian empire was centered in what
is present day Peru. The Incas achieved superior skills in
architecture, engineering, textiles and social organizations. In
1532, a civil war weakened the empire and Spanish conquistador
Francisco Pizarro raided Peru for its wealth. In 1533, Pizarro
occupied and claimed Peru for Spain. Lima became the seat of
government until Jose de San Martin, an Argentine, occupied the
city in 1821. In 1824, Simon Bolivar and Antonio J. de Sucre
defeated the Spanish and Peru became independent. On October 3,
1968 a military coup ousted President Fernando Belaunde Terry.
The new government initiated sweeping agrarian, industrial and
economic changes. Food shortages, foreign debt and strikes led
to another coup on August 29, 1976 that stemmed the socialist
transition. In July 1980, President Fernando Belaunde Terry
returned to power and moved the country closer towards free
market conditions. @
